London 2012 Open Weekend Torch RelayThe relay was set of by Chairman of Ashfield District Council, Councillor May Barsby at the Sutton Lawn adiZone and saw the torch being carried by Xtreme martial arts champion, Jack Smith. Crowds at the the Lammas Leisure Centre witnessed the Beacon being held aloft in a swim by 2012 Paralympic hopeful Ollie Hynd and a splendid Ice Skating performance from Great Britain Ice Skater Jamie Whiteman.
Sutton Harriers athletes escorted the torch bearers along the route through Sutton and Kirkby to it’s conclusion at the adiZone in Hucknall, where Karen Cresswell, Nottinghamshire’s Coummunity Coach of the Year was greeted by a large crowd as she passed the beacon to Ollie Hynd.
Carol Hallam, Ashfield District Council’s Sports Development Officer said, ‘This was a great way to celebrate some of the achievements of Ashfield’s talented athletes and community champions and also gave the people of Ashfield the opportunity to be part of the London 2012 Open Weekend Celebrations.’
