Actively Working Towards 2012

Active Ashfield looks forward to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London with great anticipation.

 Ashfield has welcomed the opportunities offered through 2012 to enable the whole of Ashfield to become involved:

Sam Hynd welcome event

The welcome home for Sam Hynd from the Paralympics in Beijing 2008 saw hundreds of people turning out in the pouring rain and the raising of the 2012 flag at Ashfield District Council offices by Sam.

Active Ashfield’s Volunteer Scheme will provide support, training and quality experiences for volunteers towards 2012 and beyond.

Ashfield School’ Athletics Facility is an accredited training venue for 2012, with a steering group working to attract an Olympic Squad to Ashfield for pre 2012 training.

Ashfield District Council’s Talented Athlete Scheme is providing free access to leisure centres for our National athletes.

Olympians from Ashfield Support In Sport (O.A.S.I.S.) raises funds to help support Ashfield’s Olympians and Paralympians.

adiZone Launch on  27 November at Sutton Lawn Pleasure GroundsThe adizone was the first of it's kind to be opened in the Midlands and one of the first outside London.The adiZone will be free for the community to use as part of our pledge to create a legacy from the London 2012 Games.

A second adiZone is to be installed in Hucknall on 25 July.

An activation plan is in place for structured activity.

Inspiring local athletes

Ashfield Club Forum and the Active Ashfield Club Accreditation Scheme aims to develop quality clubs and an infrastructure of coaches to cope with increases in participation and talent development.

Street Athletics for 2012 Open Weekend

Fastest kid in Ashfield over a 60m distance at the Sutton Lawn adiZone site.

Active Ashfield Games 2010 and beyond

Saturday 3rd July will see the first ever Active Ashfield Games. Teams from Active Sutton, Active Kirkby, Active Hucknall and Active Selston will compete in a range of sports and activities targeted through the Active Ashfield Partnership.

The Games has received funding from Ashfield District Council, NHS Nottinghamshire County, Sport Unlimited and EMDA.

The Games has also been awarded Inspiremark through ‘being inspired by 2012’

2012 Torch Relays

Ashfield hopes to support the 2012 Torch Relays for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The torch will travel for at least 3 days within the East Midlands on it’s journey to the Olympic stadium for the Olympic Games and will also visit the region for the Paralympic Torch Relay.

Change 4 Life

Working with NHS Nottinghamshire County it is hope that through events and activities in the lead up to 2012 many people will sign up to the Change 4 Life programme which will lead to an increase in activity levels and healthier lifestyles.
